Laser Welder Trips the Breaker? Usually the Power, Not the Machine

Your welder ran fine all week. Now it trips the breaker the moment you switch it on, and the customer’s ring is half done on the bench. Before you blame the machine — 9 times out of 10 this is your power, not the welder. Here’s the 10-minute check that finds out which one you’re dealing with, and what to fix so it stops happening.

Why welders trip breakers in the first place

A YAG welder charges a bank of capacitors and dumps them in a pulse — that’s a sudden, hungry draw on the supply, several times the machine’s running load. If the supply is weak, dirty or shared, the breaker gives up. A pulse welder is sensitive to mains quality in a way a grinder or a polisher isn’t. That’s not a flaw; it’s physics — and it’s fixable.

The 10-minute power check

  • Is it on a stabilizer? This is the #1 cause, and the fix is boring and reliable: a voltage stabilizer rated at ≥12 kW — twice the machine’s 5 kW draw. That headroom covers the capacitor charging surge on start-up.
  • Is it plugged into a power strip? Don’t. Run the welder on a dedicated 32A leakage breaker, wired direct. Power strips share circuits and add resistance exactly where you don’t want it.
  • Is the wire gauge adequate? Long, thin extension cables drop voltage under load and can trip breakers that are perfectly healthy.
  • Are phase and neutral swapped? It happens — worth a 30-second check with a tester.

Do these four things and most “the machine is broken” calls simply stop happening. Honestly — half the fault calls we get turn out to be dirty mains, not the machine.

When it might actually be the machine

If the power side is clean and it still trips, the usual suspect inside is the IGBT — the switching module in the discharge circuit. When it fails, it often shows burn marks, and it’s replaced as a set with its small driver board (never just the module alone). The way to tell the difference quickly: trip on a shared circuit with other machines running points at power. Trip on a clean, dedicated line, every time, from cold points at the machine.
