Is a Laser Welder Worth It for an Indian Jewelry Workshop?

India is the world’s second-biggest gold market, and right now also the most price-sensitive one. Record gold prices, buyers trading down to lighter pieces, an old-gold exchange running hot – and a lot of workshops asking the same question: is a laser welder worth it here? The answer depends on which jobs you’re doing, not on the machine’s spec sheet.

The market shifted under everyone’s feet

Gold at record highs did something counterintuitive: it didn’t kill jewelry demand, it changed its shape. Globally, jewelry fabrication tonnage fell around 19% in 2025 while its value hit records – people paid more for less gold. In India, 18K’s share of sales has climbed from 5-7% to over 15%, hallmarking has covered 9K since July 2025, and workshops are turning 100-gram designs into 40-gram pieces with hollow casting, laser-cut filigree and lattice work. Meanwhile old-gold exchange now makes up a large slice of some chains’ sales – and a lot of that gold comes back needing repair and rework, not melting.

Why lightweight work is laser work

Hollow tubes, thin walls, filigree, open lattice – these are exactly the jobs a torch struggles with, because there’s no mass to absorb the heat and the piece collapses before it joins. A laser’s small spot and short pulse put the energy where you want it and nowhere else. And if your pieces are laser-cut, they need welding that preserves that clean edge – soldering brings the heat and the seam right back.

Repair and old-gold rework is where the volume is

Chain links, clasps, resizing, prong work, stone-tightening – the everyday repair load only grows when gold is expensive and people fix instead of buy. Add the stone-in-place advantage: with localized heat you can work next to a set stone without unsetting it, which cuts hours off a job and a risk off the piece.

What to actually check before you buy in India

• Power: it should run on ordinary single-phase 220-240V. Mains quality varies – budget for a stabilizer sized at roughly twice the machine’s draw.
• Heat: ask the maximum ambient temperature. A workshop in Rajkot in May is not an air-conditioned lab. Ours is rated to 45C.
• Service and spares: who answers, how fast, and who pays freight. A machine you can’t get parts for is scrap.
• Training: laser welding is a different skill from torch work – make sure operator training is included, not sold separately.

The ROI, honestly

Don’t buy on a universal payback number – yours depends on volume. Two signals say yes: you regularly outsource complex repairs, or you regularly unset stones just to heat the piece. Both mean the laser is doing work you’re already paying for. If your bench is mostly simple, high-volume structural work where broad heat is fine, a torch may genuinely be enough, and that’s an honest answer too.
