What to Look for in a Jewelry Laser Welder

So you’re buying a jewelry laser welder — first one, or an upgrade. Every brochure says “200W” and shows a shiny cabinet. Here’s what actually separates a machine that earns its place on the bench from one that gathers dust: the pulse energy, the cooling, and what happens after you pay. Most buyers compare the wrong three things.
Don’t compare wattage — compare joules
Wattage is how long the machine can keep running. The number that decides whether it bites into gold, silver or platinum is the single pulse energy, measured in joules. Two machines can both say “200W” and be completely different machines: one delivers 60 joules a pulse, another 130.
That difference is not a detail. On a platinum prong or a casting repair, a 60-joule machine skates on the surface; a 130-joule machine melts in and holds. If a supplier quotes you wattage but won’t tell you the joules — that’s your answer. Ours is 130 joules per pulse, and it’s the first line on our spec sheet.
Spot size: you want range, not just a small number
Fine prong work needs a tiny spot. Filling porosity in a casting needs a big one. So the question isn’t “how small is the spot” — it’s “how wide is the range.” On our machine the spot goes from 0.1 mm (delicate claw work, thin chain) up to 3 mm (filling casting pores), at a fixed focal length of 110 mm. A machine that only goes small will frustrate you the first time you need to fill a hole.
Cooling decides the lifetime
Welders don’t die of work — they die of heat. A laser welder without proper cooling drifts, loses energy, then fails on a hot afternoon when you need it most. If you’re in the Gulf, India or Southeast Asia, this is the spec to read twice.
Our 200W machine carries a built-in chiller (10-litre, setpoint 27°C) and is rated for 45°C ambient — designed for workshop summers, not air-conditioned showrooms. Ask any supplier: “What’s the maximum ambient temperature, and what happens when it’s exceeded?” A machine that alarms and protects itself at the limit is better than one that silently cooks.
What it needs from your workshop
Don’t let anyone sell you a machine that needs three-phase power. This class of welder should run on a normal single-phase 220V wall socket (50 or 60 Hz — we build to your supply). Two things to budget for:
- A voltage stabilizer, ≥12 kW — twice the machine’s 5 kW draw. Dirty mains cause more “broken” machines than actual faults. This one piece of advice saves more machines than any warranty.
- A proper 32A breaker on a dedicated line — not a power strip.
Also check how you’ll watch the weld. A 10-inch screen showing the joint (CCD view) beats squinting through the beam path — safer for your eyes and easier to teach a new operator.
The spec nobody prints: after-sales
A jewelry laser welder is a long-term tool. What happens in year two is worth more than the brochure. Before you buy, get these in writing:
- Warranty length — we give two years on the machine, parts and electrical, from the factory date (happy to start it from delivery if you ask).
- What happens when something fails — we don’t ask you to ship a 135 kg machine back to China. You send a video and the serial number; we diagnose, ship the part and a swap video. Freight is on us. Response in 6 hours, diagnosis in 24, part out within 72, on your bench within a week.
- What’s not covered — lamps, lenses, filters (consumables), and glass parts like the screen. Any honest supplier tells you this before you order, not after.
That service commitment — written, not promised — is the part of the machine you’ll feel for years. It’s why we put it on the spec sheet instead of in the small print.
