Can a Laser Welder Weld Silver? Yes – Here’s the Trick

Silver ring and bangle set up for laser welding

Short answer: yes, a laser welder can weld silver — but silver is the honest test of a machine. It reflects most of the light back until it actually melts, so a weak pulse just skates off the surface and leaves a mess. If a machine handles silver cleanly, it’ll handle everything else on your bench. Here’s how it works and what to look for.

Why silver is harder than gold

Gold absorbs laser energy easily. Silver and platinum are the opposite — they bounce the energy back until the surface finally melts. That’s why the same machine that welds gold beautifully can struggle on a silver ring: the pulse has to be strong enough to punch through the reflection, not just touch the surface.

This is where the marketing stops and the engineering starts. Peak power and pulse energy decide it — not the “200W” label on the side. On our machine, the numbers that do the work are 130 joules per pulse with a pulse you can shape from 0.1 to 20 ms. That combination bites into silver instead of bouncing off it.

How we actually weld silver on this machine

  • Short pulses, tight spot — you’re not flooding heat in; you’re placing small, controlled hits. Think dotting, not blasting.
  • Start low, come up until it sticks — watch the weld: if it rounds and sits slightly below the surface without spitting, that’s your setting. Save it in the machine memory.
  • Keep the argon on the joint — it stops oxidation and keeps the weld clean. 2–5 litres a minute through the nozzle is plenty.
  • Test on scrap first, every time — same alloy, same thickness. Two minutes of scrap saves a ruined piece.

The honest boundary: when a torch is better

We sell laser welders, so you’d expect us to say “laser for everything.” We won’t. Silver conducts heat and reflects light so well that for thin silver sheet or fine silver wire, a skilled hand with a torch or soldering is often the cleaner, faster choice. The laser earns its keep on silver where precision matters — repairs on set pieces, joints near stones, or anywhere heat has to stay local. If a job is honestly better done another way, we’ll tell you that too.

Don’t take our word for it

This is a machine that gets proven on video or not at all. Send us a piece of your scrap silver — or just a photo of the jobs you do — and we’ll weld it live on camera before you spend anything. If it doesn’t handle your metal, we’ll say so. That’s the test every buyer should run.

Send us your silver — watch us weld it

Tell us what karat or grade you work with most. We’ll show you starting settings for your alloy and weld a sample on video so you can judge the machine on your metal, not our brochure.
